Mags had the hatch open before the kettle was off the ring, and the first thing through it was a cabbage white that Dennis swore was the same one nesting behind the coal sack since Tuesday. She had bought the boat from a man in Braunston who said it came with a ghost and a rudder that stuck. The ghost turned out to be the previous owner's wife, who had painted six butterflies down the cabin side in black gloss, then died before she could finish the spots on their wings. Mags spent her first winter aboard working out what the white dots were meant to be, and whether she was allowed to fill in the gaps.
Dennis came up the bank with a bag of windlasses and a face like thunder. 'Bottom gate's jammed again.'
'Then we'll wait for the ducks to shift it,' she said, and passed him a mug. They didn't wait. They leaned on the beam together until the gate gave with a groan, the water poured out in a brown tongue, and a dozen butterflies lifted off the willows at once, black and white against the green, turning over the cut as though they had been waiting for the water to show them the way.
That evening Mags took the fine brush from the tin and, by the light of the cabin lamp, dotted white into the one unfinished wing on the cabin side. It was the first thing she had ever completed on that boat. When Dennis asked what it was supposed to be, she told him it was a flight path.
