Skeletal combat scene with banner on upper arm
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two skeletal figures in armour fighting with swords across a landscape with clouds and a rising sun. The linework is fine and engraved, with dense hatching and cross-hatching for shading. The composition wraps around the upper arm and is framed by curled banners carrying partial inscriptions, all in black and grey ink.

Everyone on the ninth floor of Haddon House knew about the two men who fought on the landing after the last bus. Nobody called them skeletons to their faces. They had come up the stairwell the winter the power went off, bones clacking inside old iron, and they had been arguing ever since about which of them had died first.

Mrs Dunmore in flat 91 left them a saucer of sugar by the bin chute, because the one with the dented helmet had once said he missed sweetness more than anything. She heard them most nights, steel ringing off the concrete, and in the mornings the scuffs on the lino were fresh and the sugar was gone.
The arguing had a rule. Whoever landed the last blow on the stairs at sunrise would be the one remembered, and the other would walk down to the car park and be forgotten. Nobody ever could say who won. The sun came up over the flyover each day, low and red, and each day they stopped mid-swing and stared at it as if they had never seen one before.
Then the boy from 94, who drew everything in a spiral notebook, sat on the stairs one dawn and copied them both. He wrote the words he could read off their curling banners in careful capitals underneath. When his mum found the page, she pinned it to the lift door. The next morning the saucer was empty, and the two swords lay side by side on the bottom step, blades turned to the light, with neither man anywhere to be seen.
