Sketched apple tree with twisted branches

Botanical · Mixed · Flash

A detailed pen sketch of a mature apple tree with a knotted, twisted trunk, spreading branches, leaves and several round apples. The linework uses hatching and cross-hatching on the branches and roots to suggest form, with the crown drawn in dark red and the trunk and roots in dark green. The tree is centred on a plain white background with generous margins.

Sit down, the lot of you, and mind the gutter, it's been running since the rain. You want to know about the apple tree on Carrow Lane? Everybody on Carrow Lane knows about it, and nobody will tell you the true of it, so I will.

Its roots went under three cellar walls and a tram line that isn't there any more. The first Mrs Haddow planted it in a yard behind the chandler's the year the bells came down, and she gave it a name nobody remembers. Every October it dropped its apples into the gutters, the children carried them home to bake, and the gutters ran sweet for a week. That's the kind of tree it was.

Then the council wanted the yard for a car park, and the men came with saws on a Tuesday in November. Old Tomasz Wyre went out in his slippers and stood under the lowest branch. He didn't argue. He just sat down on the root with a flask and waited, and the foreman got bored and went off for his tea. By the time he came back the lamps were lit and the lane had gone quiet, and the tree had put out a fresh shoot clean through the cracked tarmac, as green as a dare.

So the car park went in round it. You'll find the apples there yet, if you go at the right hour, when the streetlights hum and the bins are out. Pick one and bite it, and you'll taste the yard exactly as it was. That's all the magic there is. Now, who wants to walk me home?
