Tree of life with sun and moon design
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A leafy tree with a thick, twisting trunk and exposed roots fills a circle, with a plain white sun on the left and a crescent moon on the right. The linework is fine and sketched, with soft grey shading on the trunk, branches and the rays of the sun. The design is entirely in black and grey on a white background, with a balanced, centred composition.

The officer at Dunmore Crossing, Mara Holloway, unzipped the canvas holdall and found a root ball wrapped in wet sacking, its trunk no thicker than a broom handle. The driver, a quiet man called Teodor who had not spoken for forty miles, would not meet her eye. "It's a rowan," he said at last. "It's for a grave." She told him live plants needed a certificate, and he produced one, folded soft as cloth and signed in a hand she half recognised from her own mother's recipe cards.

She radioed her supervisor, who told her to bin it and stop being sentimental. Instead Mara crouched by the sacking and turned the roots over with her gloved fingers. They had grown in a loose spiral, as if they had spent years tracing a circle in the dirt. Teodor said his village on the far side would be under a reservoir by spring. The church was coming down stone by stone, and the old tree in the square had to come out first, or the water would take it along with the bell.
She stamped the paperwork and let him through, but the sapling stayed behind in the hut, wrapped in her spare fleece. Through the night she kept getting up to check it. At dawn the sun came up pale over the fields on the left of the road, as flat and bright as a coin, and the first lorry of the shift queued without a word. Mara carried the rowan to the verge where the fence met the hedge, pressed it into the damp ground, and watched the roots settle into the earth on both sides of the line at once.
