Jellyfish tattoo on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A jellyfish with a shaded, domed bell and fine trailing tentacles runs down the arm, with the bell at the top and the tentacles curling toward the elbow. The shading uses soft greys and dark lines to give the bell a textured, three-dimensional look, while the tentacles are drawn with thin, wavy linework. The plain dark background makes the grey ink stand out against the skin.

The tide had left the big grey bell on the slipway, and Nell Garrow would not let the boy touch it. "Look with your eyes, Davy. The threads have a memory," she said, and went on knotting the net across her knees as if the thing were a dropped glove.

It was the third week of August, and the moon jellies had come in thick off the point, pale as cold dumplings in the shallows. Nobody in Skerrow ate the mackerel that came in with them, and nobody fished the lanes where they drifted. Her husband had gone out in June and come back with his left hand wrapped in wet sacking, saying only that the water had been counting him. Since then Nell had been counting too, every evening on the harbour wall, the way you count stitches when you cannot afford to drop one.
Davy crouched closer than he should have. The bell shivered, and a thread as fine as cotton lifted off the stones and looped his ankle. He did not cry out. He only stood very still, the way his grandfather had taught him to stand when a sheepdog had him cornered. Nell stepped down the slipway with the net needle in her fist, slid the point under the thread, and cut it clean. The bell pulsed once, like a held breath let go.
She carried the rest of it down on a shovel, the threads trailing behind in grey silk, and tipped it back where the water was deep enough to take it. When the tide turned, the slipway was clean again except for a fringe of wet silver on the stones, each line lying as straight as a stitch pulled through linen.
