Sketched figure with watercolour splashes on ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Mixed · Photo
A loose, sketchy outline of a standing figure with no facial features is drawn in thin black linework along the side of the ribs. Soft watercolour-style washes in pink, purple, yellow and orange spread behind and around the figure, with small ink splatters near its base. The composition is vertical and follows the curve of the torso.

The galley on the Marisol Dane smells of scorched toast by five, and you are the only one awake to mind it. The kettle ticks as it cools. Somewhere below the deck plates, the engine keeps its slow argument with the sea, and you stir porridge with one hand while the other holds the sketchbook that Ines left behind in Valparaíso, its spine cracked, its pages swollen with damp.

She was the ship's painter for three voyages, which meant she spent her watches on the foredeck with a tin of pans and a jar of rainwater, and her paintings dried stiff on the rail while the spray came over. She never painted faces. She said faces were a lie a person told in the first minute and never corrected. You used to bring her coffee in a chipped mug and she would tip her head without looking up, and you never once saw what she was drawing, only the colours that bled onto her wrists.
This morning you open the book to the last page. A figure stands there in thin black pencil, no features, one arm folded across the body as if holding something back. Around it, the wash is still wet in your memory: pink from the sunrise over the Bay of Biscay, violet from the storm that never came, a lick of orange from the lamp above the hotplate. Where the ship lurched in the swell, her pen had jumped and left small dark stains at the figure's feet.
You take the pencil from behind your ear and add a line where her hip should be. Then you close the book, set it on the warm rail of the oven, and go back to the toast, which is past saving.
