Watercolour flower on shoulder and upper arm
Botanical · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A large flower with loose, petal-like washes of purple, pink and blue spreads across the shoulder and upper arm, with splashes of colour spreading toward the collarbone. Black linework outlines parts of the bloom and runs down the arm as a thin, dripping stem. The colour is painterly and the composition follows the curve of the shoulder.

The rain came in sideways over the showground at Hollow Meadow, and by six the paint on the big wheel's gondolas had run into the wood. You had been hired to repaint them, not to save them, and Mr Ansell had made that plain with a tin of violet and a brush worn down to a whisker. "Nobody comes to a fair for tidy," he said. "Make it look like it's bleeding."

So you did it wet on wet, with the board tilted against a crate and the water jar going grey by ten. Each petal bled into the last, pink running into blue wherever the brush dragged. The stem you drew last, one black line from the heart of the bloom, would not sit straight. It slid down the panel and dripped off the bottom in a bead you had not meant to make. Ansell found it at midnight with a lantern and went quiet for a long time.
"That's the one," he said at last. "Leave the drip."
The next afternoon the gondola swung out over the crowd with a dahlia the size of a cartwheel blooming on its side, and a child below pointed up and said the flower was falling. Nobody else had noticed the rain had stopped, or that the wheel had started turning again, slow and bright, with the colour still wet on it.
