Sketched monster head with open jagged jaws
Black and grey · Flash
A pencil sketch of a monstrous creature head seen in profile, with a wide open mouth full of jagged, layered teeth and a long tendril curling down and out to the left. The linework is loose and sketchy, with cross-hatching and dense shading inside the mouth and a darker patch of shading on the head. The drawing is in black and grey on a plain white background, with the composition running diagonally from the top right to the bottom left.

By half past two the thing from the drains has pushed its head through the marquee flap, and you are the only one who has noticed the bride's grandmother has already offered it a sausage roll. Ray, the groom, swears it has lived under Hollins Farm for eleven years, a grumble in the pipes that nobody took seriously until the caterers started emptying their fat traps into the beck. You were made best man for a reason. Someone had to hold the confetti while the situation got sorted.

Its body is the colour of wet slate and it lifts the top tier of the cake with a tendril as delicate as a pastry chef's. Its jaws open in rows, one behind another, like a comb dragged through too many winters of rain. Nobody is hurt. The vicar, who has spent a decade reading the banns of people who did not want them read, goes off to find a bucket and comes back with a ladle instead.
Then the speeches start, because nobody has told the speeches anything. Ray's dad rises with his notes, and the creature turns its head towards him slowly, like a dog hearing its name. You want to say something useful, but what comes out is 'Go on then', and it is the bravest thing you have ever said in front of a microphone.
Later, when the last taxi has gone and the marquee smells of vinegar and lilies, you find a silver stripe of trail across the grass, glinting towards the beck. The top tier has gone with it. Ray says it always did have good taste.
