Skull and daggers on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A skull with two crossed daggers above it and blood dripping from the jaw and blade tips below. The linework is bold and outlined, with solid black areas and stippled grey shading on the skull. The design is centred on the leg with black ink only and a dark background behind the limb.

Dear Tom,

The frost held long enough to do the hog on Thursday, so that's done and the smokehouse is full of its own sweet smoke. We were up before the light, Uncle Ray, the Pearce boys and me, with the lantern hung off the gatepost and steam coming off every breath. Dad couldn't lift the scalding tub this year. He stood at the fence and told us how to do it, which we all pretended we didn't need.
The water took an hour to come up to heat, so we spent it stamping our boots and passing the flask round. Mum sent out bread still warm in a tea towel and the boys argued over whose hands were steadier. Ray did the sticking with the long blade, quick and quiet, and I held the lamp because I'm the only one who doesn't flinch at that part any more. A winter morning makes everything sharper: the cold on the steel, the smell of cut straw, the way the ground rings under your heel.
Dad asked after you when the work was finished. He said nothing else, just turned his cap round in his hands and looked at the sky, which was going grey over the top field. I told him you'd be home for Christmas if the trains behaved. He nodded like he'd heard that before.
Your knives are still on the nail by the back door, cleaned and oiled the way you left them. I haven't touched them. If you're coming, bring the good tea and your own coat, because the wind up here doesn't care who's been away.
Love, Jess
