Leaping rabbit and flower on a calf

Traditional · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A rabbit mid-leap faces up and to the left, with a dotted arc above its head and a five-petalled flower with a dotted centre below it. Several solid black leaves and teardrop shapes sit around the flower and the rabbit's hind legs. Bold outlines and solid black fills are combined with fine stippled shading on the rabbit's fur, and the design is in black ink and grey only.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Marta had counted the guests twice before the pass closed, and twice she came up one more than the rooms could hold. The innkeeper's boy, Tobin, was sent out with a lantern to the woodpile, where something was moving under the drift.

It was a hare, or what had been one, its hind leg caught in a wire snare somebody had set down the valley. Tobin cut it free with his grandfather's knife. The hare didn't run. It stood and looked up past the lantern at the sky, where the snow had thinned to a ring of stars, as if the dark had been pricked with a needle.

Back inside, the travellers had pushed two tables together near the stove: a widower with a violin, a woman selling thread, a priest who wouldn't stop coughing. Marta set a bowl of barley broth in front of each and said nothing about the hare, because the leg would mend and the story was too small to tell over a storm.

In spring, when the road opened, a wild rose at the back door had put out flowers nobody had planted, five petals each, dark at the centre. Tobin swore the hare came back at dusk to eat the fallen petals, and that when it leapt it cleared the gate and kept going, over the frozen river, as if the winter had only been a long white floor it had agreed to cross.
