Skull and mandala on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A skull sits across the forearm with a large mandala-style flower above it, and roses and leaves fill the lower area near the wrist. The linework is fine and black, with stippled dotwork shading filling the petals and skull details. The tattoo is in black ink on pale skin against a dark sleeve, and the framing is close and centred on the arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every night the last train out of Carrow Cross carried a single rose in the guard's van, and every morning the rose had turned to paper. Ada Penrose, who swept the platform, said the signal lamps did it, burning too close to the petals. Her uncle said it was the dead. He had buried a stationmaster's wife beneath the embankment the spring the viaduct went up, and he claimed she wanted her flowers delivered.

Ada took the late duty herself the winter the frost came down so hard the points seized. She sat by the stove with a tin of tea and the rose in a jam jar, and at midnight the lamps went out one by one until only the moon was left lying on the rails. A thin grey woman stood on the down platform with a grin under her veil, and above her head frost had grown into a flower as wide as a cartwheel, every petal ruled fine as a pencil line. She asked Ada the time. Ada told her it was twenty to twelve. The woman said that was too early, and walked off the end of the platform into the dark.

In the morning the jam jar was full of fresh roses, red and cold, and the paper one was gone. Ada chalked the hour on the timetable board as the old rule said, and every night after that she wound the station clock a quarter hour fast, so the woman would always be told it was late enough to go home. The points thawed in March. Nobody has asked her why.
