Geometric mandala on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large mandala tattoo is centred on the forearm, built from layered petals, pointed leaf shapes and a central star-like flower. Fine linework and stippled dotwork shading give the design depth, and a ring of dots sits around the outer edge. The tattoo is entirely black and grey against dark clothing and a black leather strap at the wrist.

You are on your knees at ten past two, the only light a work lamp clamped to the rim of the drained pool, and the floor has been asking you the same question all week. Tile by tile, the mosaic in the old baths on Lister Street opens outward from a centre no bigger than a thumbnail: eight petals of ochre and slate, a ring of pointed leaves, then a second ring you have not yet found the bottom of.

You trace the lines onto greaseproof paper, the way your grandmother copied patterns off a tablecloth. Outside, a night bus sighs at the lights on Roundhay Road, and the sound comes through the high windows like something being poured. Every petal has a twin on the far side, and every twin is slightly wrong, one point too sharp, a leaf turned the other way, as if the maker had been practising in the dark and improving a little each time.
Near the outer edge there is a tile that will not sit. You lever it with a flat blade and it lifts whole. Beneath it, pressed into the mortar, is a dot of blue glass no bigger than a lentil. Then another, and another, forming a ring that nobody could see from above. You count them: eighty-one. The maker left the centre for whoever came after, and the ring was the instructions.
You set the last ochre tile at ten to five. You stand, knees cracking, and look down at the whole flower lying open under the lamp, and for a moment it seems to turn on its axis, like a thing that has been waiting. Then the first grey light finds the windows, and you pack your blade and walk home the long way, already certain you will be back.
