Skull and peony flash drawing
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
A pen and ink drawing on white paper shows a human skull with leaves across its top and sides and a large peony bloom resting over its jaw. The skull's eye sockets and cheek areas are shaded with fine dots, while the petals and leaves are built from fine contour lines with some hatching. The image is entirely black and grey, with a black marker pen placed to the left for scale.

Mind the trolley, it pulls to the left, same as the night sister who had it before me. Pull that chair up to the window and I'll tell you about the man who carried peonies up to Ward Nine every night for a fortnight, the winter the car park froze solid.

His name was Arthur Penhallow, a gardener with soil still under his nails at two in the morning. His wife Edna was in bed four, and the peonies came from a glasshouse on the far side of town, pink as a christening bonnet and twice the size of a fist. Sister Marion wanted them binned. The smell, she said, was too much for the sick. Arthur only nodded and set the jug back on the sill, and Marion, who had a soft heart under all that starch, let him keep them.
By the second week the petals had gone papery at the edges, and he sat plucking the brown ones off and laying them on a folded hankie. Edna asked him why he bothered. He said a peony doesn't drop its petals one by one like a sensible flower. It holds on, holds on, then lets go of the whole thing in a single morning, and you don't get to pick the morning. That night he drew one for her on the back of a drip chart, a skull with a bloom resting across its jaw, the lines so fine you had to hold it to the light.
Edna went on the Thursday, just before the birds started. Arthur left the drawing on the sill, weighted down with the jug, and the last pink petals came loose and fell across it while he watched. Marion has it framed in her kitchen now. Go on, drink your tea before it stews.
