Skull, feathers and roses tattoo design
Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil sketch of a human skull shaded in soft grey tones, framed by feathers at the top and two detailed roses, with smaller leaves and buds around the edges. The linework is fine and layered, with cross-hatched shading on the skull and rose petals, and the design fills a tall portrait composition on a spiral-bound sketchbook page. The image is black and grey throughout.

The sketchbook came down from the loft in a carrier bag that smelt of mothballs, its spiral wire rusted at one corner. Your aunt wanted to skip it. You turned the pages on the kitchen table instead, past pencil studies of teapots and a hand drawn forty times, until you reached the skull, sitting heavy on the paper with feathers rising behind it like smoke.

Nobody in the family knew where Gran had got the feathers. She had never kept birds and never got further than Morecambe on a good year. But the quills were drawn with a patience that made your eyes ache: every barb laid in separately, the tips sharpened to points, and one peacock eye curling out at the top corner as if it had been caught mid-glance. Two roses sat low against the bone, their petals folded over one another in tight cross-hatching, like flowers pressed flat in a library book and never quite forgiven.
Your aunt rang on Thursday asking whether the sketchbook was worth anything. You said no, then said yes, then hung up before she could answer. That night you sat up with a torch and a biro, copying the shadow under the cheekbone, learning where Gran had pressed hard and where she had let the graphite go pale. By three the kettle had gone cold twice.
Behind the last blank page you found a sheet of tracing paper, the eye sockets pricked through with a pin. Under it, in her schoolroom capitals, she had written: SHE'LL WANT THE FEATHERS, NOT THE ROSES. You laid the tracing over the drawing, and the pinholes sat exactly in the dark hollows of the skull, as though she had measured them before she drew.
