Skull and pocket watch on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A realistic skull fills most of the upper arm, with a pocket watch with Roman numerals set into its forehead area and a chain hanging down beside the jaw. The shading uses soft greys and deep blacks to give the skull volume, with heavier shadow in the eye socket and teeth. The image is a close crop of the arm against a dark background, with the tattoo as the clear focus.

The sexton said stopped clocks were bad luck to wind. Hetty said her uncle had been bad luck to lose, and the watch could take its chances with her.

Her brother wanted it sold. Jem had already walked the plot with a tape measure, counting the cold frames and the rows of blackened leeks gone to seed, and a man from Harrogate was coming on Saturday with a van. It's only a watch, Het, he had said, leaning on the gate. It won't tell you anything new.

She didn't argue. She sat on the upturned bucket among the bean poles and opened the back of the case with her thumbnail, the way her uncle had shown her when she was small enough to be trusted with the little screwdriver. Pressed flat inside the lid was a seed packet, its paper soft as cloth, and on the back in his square capitals: SOW WHEN THE CHAIN COMES LOOSE. The chain had been hanging loose from the waistcoat for years. She had never once thought to read the lid.

Hetty fetched the trowel from the shed. Jem could have his van on Saturday. The beans could go in first, and the leeks could go to seed for somebody else, and the watch could keep its twenty past four a little longer while she dug.
