Compass and rope on an upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A realistic compass with a glass face, needle and star-shaped compass rose sits at the centre of the design, with a coiled rope running across the top and a ring fitting hanging from its lower edge. The compass shows fine shading, highlights and reflections, while the rope is rendered with strong texture and warm brown tones. The background is an outlined map of coastlines in thin black linework, filled with a soft tan wash that blends into the skin.

The glass on the compass cracked the winter we left Harrowgate, and my father swore it was the only thing on the ship that had never lied to him. He kept it in his coat pocket wrapped in a bit of oilcloth, and when the rest of us were shouting over the wind he would take it out, hold it flat on his palm, and wait for the needle to stop shivering. North was north. Nothing else was that reliable.

We ran for the Scilly channel with the rope gone stiff from salt, and on the third night the mainsheet parted with a crack like a rifle. Tobias Quaile lost two fingers under the block before anyone could reach him. I remember how calm my father became, how he tied off the rope with his own hands while the deck heaved, and how he kept saying the bearings aloud so the boy could hear something steady over his screaming.
We made port at dawn. The chart was water-stained and the coastline on it had softened into grey, but the little brass ring on the compass was still warm where he had gripped it. He gave the compass to Tobias to hold and told him it would point the way home if he kept his eyes on it. Tobias never went to sea again. He kept the compass on the mantel in Penzance until the day he died, and the needle, I am told, still swings true.
