Skull and portrait back and leg tattoos
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A person is photographed from behind against a dark patterned wallpaper, showing a large skull across the upper back and tattoos on both arms. Two female portraits run down the thighs, one with a single tear falling from the eye, with detailed soft shading and smooth gradients. The palette is limited to black and grey ink, and the pink thong and the photo's dark lighting frame the lower body.

The paper came off the north wall of Hollins Lodge in curls the colour of stewed tea, and the first face I saw was a woman's, pressed up through the plaster as if she had been waiting behind it for someone to strip the room bare. Mrs Abernethy wanted the damask kept, every sprig and fleur of it, so I worked the new sheets around the old with a paste bucket and a stiff brush. Beyond the lane the oaks came right down to the last cottage, and their shadows lay across the sill like black lace.

By the second day I had found the skull. It sat behind the pattern at shoulder height, its grey wash gone soft with damp, its eye sockets hollowed out to bare lath. Beneath it a second woman looked sideways from under heavy lids, and a single drop ran from her lower lash toward the skirting, the paint gathered there thick and dark where the water had settled. Mrs Abernethy said the last paperer had left in a hurry and never sent for his wages.
On the third evening I could not bring myself to cover them. I mixed a thinner paste, laid the damask over the skull and smoothed it with the flat of my hand, and the woman's tear showed through the paper like a bead of rain on glass. When I climbed down the ladder the rain had started properly and the oaks were thrashing at the windows. I wiped my hands on my apron and noticed the paste had run down the sheet in a pale line, following exactly the track of the drop.
In the morning Mrs Abernethy called me up before I had my coat off. The paper over the woman's face had split along the seam, and the cheek beneath was wet, as if she had been crying all night. She asked me to leave it. I told her I already had.
