Skull and pocket watch across a back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large skull sits across the lower back, with a clock face and Roman numerals behind it and a pocket watch hanging from a chain near the shoulder. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft grey gradients and sharp highlights on the bone and metal. The tattoo fills most of the frame, and the person is shown from behind with the head cropped out.

Mind the lamp, it'll smoke if you breathe on it. Now, where was I? Ah, the watch. Old Tobias Quill kept the chronometer on the Marigold for eleven years, and he kept his own pocket watch on a chain across his waistcoat, because a man who trusts one clock is a fool and a man who trusts two is a drunkard, he used to say. The Roman numerals on his dial had worn so smooth you could only read the twelve by the scratch beside it.

Off Cape Horn the Marigold ran into a week of fog so thick the helmsman could not see the bowsprit. Quill sat up in the chart room winding both timepieces by candle, counting hours he could not see. On the seventh night the chronometer stopped dead at a quarter past three. He swore it was the damp. The pocket watch kept ticking, though, and when he held it to his ear it sounded like a man knocking on a coffin lid from the inside.
He did not sleep. At first light the fog lifted like a sheet off a bed, and there on the grey water lay a reef no chart had ever shown. The first mate wanted to call it a miracle. Quill only opened the back of the pocket watch and found a folded note in a child's hand: 'Wind me before the skull turns.' He wound it, and the fog came down again that same hour, and it never lifted on any voyage he sailed after.
