Skull and woman's profile on a back piece

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large back piece shows a detailed human skull on the left, a woman's face in profile turned towards it, and a skeletal hand wrapping around her neck from below. The shading is smooth and highly contrasted, with soft grey gradients on the skin and deep blacks in the shadows. The composition fills the whole back, with the skull and face sitting close together at the centre.

Dear Tamsin,

The dead have stopped arriving in the hold since the ship turned for the cold star, and Mother's ledger says nobody has signed for Deck Nine in eleven years. I went down anyway this morning with the lamp and the brass key. The corridor smells of wet paper and the scorched sweetness of the old reclaimers, and at the far end the archive door stood open, which it never does.

Inside, the Clerk was waiting by the card index. You remember the stories, the great skull that sits in the records wall and reads every name aloud before it lets a body go. I always thought it was a child's tale. It isn't. It leaned towards me as I spoke, its jaw working slowly, and the woman pressed against its shoulder turned her face up to it the way Mother used to turn towards the viewport. Then she lifted one grey hand and laid it on my throat, very gently, the way you'd check a pulse.

She didn't squeeze. She asked me one question: who was the last person you put back into the dark? I told her Father, and she nodded and let go.

I have his register now, folded inside my coat. I think I'll sign it myself tonight, under his name, and leave the lamp on for whoever comes next.
