Black and grey realism skull on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large skull fills the upper arm, with its eye sockets and nasal cavity shaded in deep black and its teeth picked out in lighter greys. Above it, a star made of arrow-tipped points sits across the top of the skull, drawn with crisp, sharp edges. The image is black and grey throughout, with soft gradients on the bone and a dark shirt framing the arm against a blurred background.

Mrs Ada Thorne had been dead eleven days when the chart came back to the workshop, rolled tight in oilcloth and sealed with black wax. Thomas Lowry, who had cut copperplate for her father's firm for thirty years, unrolled it on the bench under the lamp and found the compass rose drawn in ink so fine it seemed to hum.

The rose had eight points, but the arrowheads were sharp and wrong, each one pointing a little past the paper's edge. Beneath it, where the coastline should have been, someone had shaded a skull the size of a dinner plate, its sockets dense as harbour mud. Thomas knew the hand. It was his own, from a commission he had forgotten taking, and he had no memory of drawing a single line of it.
He tried to set the chart aside and go home to his supper, but the eight points kept catching his eye as he walked along Harbour Row. At the quayside the fishermen were hauling nets and not one of them looked up when he asked the way to the Thorne warehouse. Inside, the skull was waiting on the counter, a real one, bone-white and cracked along the brow, with a rusted nail driven through the crown to hold the map flat.
He understood then what the rose was for. Every chart he had ever made had been a promise that the sea could be measured, and every promise had its price. He took up the pen, drew the last arrow pointing at his own door, and went to fetch his coat.
