Skull-bodied spider on an upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of a spider whose abdomen is a detailed skull with shaded eye sockets and teeth. The long legs are drawn with bold black outlines and soft grey shading that gives them a rounded, three-dimensional look. The design fills the upper arm against a plain skin background, with the legs reaching toward the edges of the frame.

Dear Aud, the snow shut the Hollin Gate on Tuesday and the mule path went under with it, so I am writing by the stove in the toll hut while the shutters knock. You will laugh, but the spider is back. Old Mrs Pyle says it is the same one that lived in the bell rope at Sankey church, the one with a skull strapped on for a belly. I have only ever seen it in the bottom of a lantern, where it sits very still and watches the flame.

Its legs go out across the rock face like the spokes of a broken umbrella, each one drawn so heavy with shadow that the carters swear they lift when nobody is looking. The skull faces the road. Its eye holes have been black since the autumn fire, and when the wind comes through the gap it hums, a low note like a cart wheel on wet cobbles. Hamish tied a red rag to the gatepost to keep it sweet. The rag was gone by morning and the post was wound round with thread finer than hair.
Last night I went out with the lamp to check the bar. A single grey line ran from the gatepost to our door latch, taut as a fiddle string. I cut it with the bread knife. This morning it was back, and tied to it was a scrap of paper folded small, with a name written in a hand I did not know. It was yours, Aud. Not the spelling, but the way you cross your sevens.
Come up before the thaw. Bring red ribbon, and do not tell it where you are going.
