Skull with smoke wisps on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large skull is shown front on, with dark eye sockets, a heart-shaped nasal cavity and a row of teeth. Soft, smudged grey shading and sharp black accents create depth, while wisps of smoke rise above the skull and curl down past the jaw. The tattoo fills most of the frame on a forearm, with grey pavement visible in the background.

Dennis Ashby had come back to Harrowgate Comprehensive for the twenty-fifth reunion mainly to see whether Sandra Pike still owed him a fiver. The sports hall smelled of floor polish and warm crisps. Someone had propped the old year-book photographs on an easel by the urn, and Dennis found his own face there, scowling beside a cricket bat.

He went out to the car park for air and found the smoke first, a grey thread rising from behind the bike sheds where the fence had always had a gap. Three men stood there passing a cigarette like a relay baton. Nobody was supposed to smoke there any more, and nobody had ever really stopped. The smoke rose, folded over itself and slid down past their knees like a sleeve pulled over a hand.

"You still owe us a fiver," said Gary Doyle, without turning round. Dennis said he had never borrowed a fiver from anyone. Gary laughed, and the laugh came out with the smoke, which thickened and wound around the three of them until their faces thinned to grey and their teeth stood out bright as chalk. Dennis saw the bone showing under their jaws and understood they had been waiting in that gap for twenty-five years, waiting for someone to notice the debt was still open.

He went back inside, dug a crumpled five-pound note out of his wallet and smoothed it flat against the easel. Under his own scowling photograph he tucked it into the frame of the year-book page where Gary grinned with a missing front tooth. Behind him the sports hall lights dimmed one bank at a time, and the crisps by the urn went soft in their bowls.
