Skull in feathered headdress drawing
Realism · Black and grey · Flash
A profile skull wears a tall headdress of layered feathers that sweep back across the top and side of the image. The drawing uses fine pencil hatching and soft shading to render the bone, teeth and feather barbs. It is drawn in black and grey on a plain white background, with the subject centred and fully visible.

Mr Pell never let the apprentices touch the crow feathers. He sorted them himself at the long bench under the skylight in Sheep Street, laying each one flat with a bone folder and grading the barbs from dull to glossy as if he were ranking hymns. The skull at the end of the bench had come from the Thursday market, a bullock's head he had boiled clean over a month before he would let it near the feathers at all.

Then one February the order arrived from Lady Harcourt's agent: a headdress for the winter masque at the hall, tall as a church door, every quill from a rook or a jackdaw, with the skull set at its heart. Pell worked through the nights. I drew the quill patterns on squared paper while he fitted the layers into a frame of cane, and he hummed when a row locked in, a flat tuneless sound I came to dread more than any reproach.
On the last night the lamp guttered and every feather lifted at once, the way a field of rooks rises when a gun goes off beyond the hedge. I watched the rows settle back, then sweep slowly across the bench toward the open door, the skull turning on its cane to follow them. Pell did not look up from his folder. He only said, quite gently, that the birds had come for their property, and that we were not to chase them.
