Sugar skull with roses flash design
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
A detailed sugar skull sits at the centre, decorated with scrollwork, a diamond motif on the forehead and roses in the eye sockets. Three roses with leaves frame the skull on the left, right and below, forming a symmetrical composition. The design uses dense black linework and solid black areas on a cream background, with no colour.

Behind the grille of the bakery on Calle Nueve, the paper marigolds were already wilting in their buckets, and the scrollwork on the wall was still wet at the edges. She worked with a size-zero brush and a jar of cheap cream gouache her uncle swore by, and she did not look up when the church bell across the square struck two.

The diamond was the hard part. Her grandmother had always drawn it on the forehead of the cracked plaster saint in the back room, a little stone set in bone, and she said the dead liked something to hold their attention. Marisol had tried it four times. Each time the point wandered, and each time she wiped it away with the heel of her hand and started again, the cream smearing into the black like fog over a canal.
At a quarter past three a boy in a borrowed jacket stopped at the kerb and asked if the roses were for sale. She told him they were for the dead, and he laughed, then didn't, and then he sat on the step and watched her draw the last rose in the left socket until its petals curled like a fist opening.
When the sun came up, the wall held three roses and a skull grinning at the street. Her uncle would ask who had painted the diamond, and she would say it was her grandmother's hand, and he would not argue, because the brush was still in her fingers and the paint was dry.
