Skull made of lettering

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A skull outline is formed entirely from white serif and blackletter-style lettering on a solid black background. The words Beautiful Disaster, Perfectly Imperfect, Love, Hate, Live Fast, Die Pretty and Sinner Saint fill the skull's cranium, eye sockets, nose and jaw, with small hearts and laurel-like flourishes in the negative spaces. The image is a flat, high-contrast monochrome design with no shading, showing only the drawing itself.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Nell, the colliery whistle went at half five again this morning, and Mam still hasn't forgiven me for the chapel hat. You'll want the news of the concert, so here it is. Walter Pring finished the board for the Miners' Welfare on Thursday, and the whole village is talking about it. He painted a skull out of words, big as a cart wheel, with BEAUTIFUL DISASTER arched across the top and the eyes made from the other lines, LOVE on one side and HATE on the other, so you can't tell which way it's grinning.

The deacon went white when he saw SINNER SAINT running down the jaw, and he wanted DIE PRETTY painted out altogether. Walter just wiped his brush on his apron and said the pit had taught him every one of those words was true about somebody on the night shift. Nobody argued after that, not even Mr Hughes, who has never once admitted to being anything but perfectly imperfect.

I stood under it on Saturday with the lamp in my hand and looked up through the eye holes at the rafters. The light from the back window came through the gaps between the letters and made little bright stripes across the floor. I thought of you on the train to Cardiff, and how you said you'd send for me when the flat was ready. Don't make me wait too long, love. The stripes move when you stand still, and I'm tired of watching them on my own.
