Sugar skull with rose design
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
A symmetrical sugar skull design drawn in white outline on a solid black background. A rose sits across the top of the skull, with leaves and scrollwork around it, and ornate flower patterns fill both eye sockets. The jaw has a lattice of teeth and a diamond motif below, with the composition centred and fully framed.

The marigold seller at the crossroads outside Santa Rosalía had a rule about the dead: you sold them what they asked for and not a petal more. So when the young carpenter Tomás came to her stall the night before the feast, asking for white paint and a single red rose, she only raised an eyebrow and wrapped the rose in newspaper.

"For my grandmother's door," he said. "She always liked roses better than the candles."
She did not ask him how his grandmother had died, or where he had buried her, because the desert keeps its own accounts. She only told him to paint the skull the way the old women did, all scrollwork and swirl, the eyes full of flowers so the dead would have something to look at while they ate.
He worked until the stars went thin, sketching the skull on the pale planks of the door, filling the sockets with petals, setting a lattice of teeth along the jaw. When he finally laid the brush down, the rose across the brow looked less painted than grown, and the diamond beneath the grin shone like a coin that had never been spent.
At midnight the door swung open on its own, and a dry wind came through smelling of rain that had not fallen in forty years. Tomás stood in the road and watched the white outline breathe, and then he went home and slept, for the first time since the funeral, with his own door left open behind him.
