Skull, rose and pocket watch on an upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo on an upper arm combines a shaded skull, an eye inside a triangle, a rose and an open pocket watch. A compass rose and faint map details sit lower on the arm, and the rose and watch overlap the skull. The shading is smooth and detailed, with strong contrast and soft grey gradients across the surfaces.

The king of Carrowmere had sent for every mapmaker in the valley, and by the third morning only old Hesketh Vane was left standing in the hall with his boots still wet from the ferry. He had brought a compass, his father's pocket watch, and a bundle of charts he would not let anyone touch.

"Show me where the river goes when it's tired," the king said.
Hesketh opened the watch case and laid it face up on the map table. The hands had stopped at a quarter to nine. "It goes where the hour tells it," he said, "and the hour is never the same twice in one kingdom."
The king laughed, then did not. Behind the throne hung a painted eye inside a triangle, the sign the old house had used for centuries to show that nothing in the realm went unwatched. Hesketh had noticed it on the way in and had decided not to look at it for long.
He drew the river that night by candlelight. In the morning he found the king's own name written along the bottom edge in ink that had not been there before. He rolled the chart, put the watch in his coat, and walked home by the north road, which was the only road that was never drawn on any map at all.
