Compass and rose on an upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A detailed pocket compass with its lid open sits at the centre of the design, with a rose bloom to its upper left. Fine, criss-crossing lines behind the compass suggest a map or chart. The shading is smooth and tonal, built from black ink and greys with strong highlights on the metal casing.

The lift in Harcourt House has been dead since March, so you climb the fourteen flights with your gran's pocket compass in your coat, its lid clicking open on every landing. The brass has gone soft at the corners, but the needle still swings north without any fuss, as if nobody ever asked it to do anything else. Her rule was simple: always know which way the sea is, even when the walls won't let you see it.

From the eleventh floor you can see the car park, the grey stripe of the canal and the council's painted map in the lobby, which someone has scribbled over with a biro arrow pointing at nothing in particular. Mrs Okafor's roses are struggling in their tin pots along the walkway. You stop to breathe and watch the light come off the estuary, wondering how a whole estate can feel like a place you're leaving before you've left it.
Tomasz on fourteen is going to Leeds on Friday. You meant to give him the compass, to pass it on the way you were passed it, but his door is open and the hallway is stacked with boxes. He is taping a chart of the north coast to the bare wall, corners curling, and he asks you, without looking up, which way is north. You tap the glass of the compass and wait. The needle trembles, then settles, pointing past his window towards the water you both pretend you can still see.
He holds it up to the light and turns it slowly, the lid catching the window like a small moon. Somewhere below, the lift doors groan open for the first time since March, and neither of you moves to see who is coming up.
