A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ring's lights dim at what the clock calls night, and you are still on your knees in bay nine, thumbing a cutting into the grey loam. The vine is older than the station's second hull. Its roots have taken the old skull that Venn dug out of the ice-cap cargo and refused to throw away, and now the gold of it shows through the leaves like a lamp left on.

Venn has been dead for eleven years, or perhaps twelve. Nobody on the ring keeps exact count anymore. The blue butterflies came from a lab crate that cracked during the descent, and they breed in the humidity fans, drifting through the corridors and settling on anything warm. You have stopped shooing them. A pink ribbon of bindweed has looped the spine and tied itself off at the wrist-bone, and the first red roses opened three days ago, all at once, as if someone had called them.

The council wants the bay cleared for a water tank. They sent a notice with a stamp, which is how you know it is serious. You have until the next dimming. You fill a tin with soil, set the single cutting in it, wind a length of the bindweed around the root ball, and lock the skull in its crate with the vines still wrapped about it.

At the airlock, the purser asks what you are carrying. You tell him it is a garden. He looks at the crate, at the butterflies resting on its lid, and lets you through. Outside, the planet turns below, green in one long stripe where the rain has come back. You hold the tin against your chest and watch the ring's lights go out, one row at a time, until only the flowers are lit.
