Traditional tattoos on legs with stag and ship's wheel
Traditional · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
Full-length view of a person's legs in a pale ruffled skirt and black platform heels. A bird with flowers covers the outer thigh, a stag head on a shield sits on the lower leg, and a ship's wheel and rose designs appear lower down near the ankles. The bold outlines are filled with flat red, blue, yellow and green ink against a plain light background.

The stag had hung over the bar at the Hart and Helm for longer than anyone could remember, its antlers gone the colour of weak tea, and when the snow shut the road for its third day Edie Marr dragged a chair across the flagstones to take it down. Her uncle had fixed it there with a brass hook and one rule: the beast was not for selling, whatever the men from Kendal offered.

Behind the plaster, wrapped in oilcloth, she found a ship's wheel no bigger than a saucer and a letter folded small, the paper gone soft as cloth from damp. The hand was one she didn't know. Dear Tom, it began. If the road holds you'll find the rose bush by the old lime kiln, and what I left under the third stone is yours and not the sea's.
Outside, the wind dragged a sheet of white across the yard, and beyond the lane a lamp swung slowly, the way a lantern does on a boat's deck. Edie thought of her uncle's rope-scarred hands and how he had never once said where he went in the winter of 1961. He had always kept his face turned from the window when anyone mentioned the coast.
She carried the wheel to the glass and held it up against the grey light. Six spokes, one of them chipped. The stag had always seemed to gaze out towards the water, and now she understood he had been keeping watch over the wrong direction on purpose. She rehung the beast, climbed down, and went to find her boots.
