Black and grey realism tattoo of skulls, a figure and a city skyline inside a vessel outline on the upper arm.

Skulls and cityscape in a vessel on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large vessel-shaped outline frames human skulls, a pale silhouetted figure and a city skyline with clouds. The shading is greyscale and smooth, with finer stippled detail in the buildings and bone. The design fills most of the upper arm against warm skin on a dark background.

Tomas Greave had blown glass for thirty years in the works on the Tyne, and he knew a bottle with a bad heart when he picked one up. This one came off the cooling rack with a bubble trapped in its shoulder, a grey cloud the size of a thumbnail, and when he held it to the lamp he saw a whole town inside. Chimneys. A bridge with its lamps lit. Small dark shapes stacked along the floor of the glass like coal in a scuttle.

His daughter Edie came in from the yard with the ledger under her arm and stopped dead. "Dad, those are skulls."

"They're the men who never came up from the seam," he said. "Every bottle holds something. That's what the old makers said."

She didn't believe him, and he didn't blame her. He sealed the neck with a cork and a wax thumbprint and set it on the highest shelf above the furnace, where the heat rose and nobody had to look at it.

Years later, when the pit closed and the village emptied into the city, Edie found the bottle in a crate of his things. The figure in the glass, a pale shape no bigger than a finger, stood in the middle of the clouded skyline with its arms out, as if it had been holding the whole town up. She turned it toward the window, and for a moment the light went right through the walls, and the skulls were only shadows on the floor of the glass.
