Biomechanical gears on a calf
Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A leg is shown from the side, with a tattoo of mechanical parts such as cogs, a piston and cables appearing through a torn opening in the skin. The linework is detailed, and the metal parts are rendered with strong highlights and shadows that give them depth. The tattoo is entirely in black and grey and fills much of the lower leg, against a wooden floor in an indoor setting.

The winch at Skerrow Quay had been silent since the Morag went down, yet on still nights the drum could be heard turning under the harbour wall, a slow ratchet and a click, like a clock counting out the tide.

Old Tam Ferrier had built the engines of every boat in the fleet from scrap iron and salvaged brass, and he had a habit of talking to them while he worked. When the Morag's keel split on the Teeth, he did not weep. He went down to the slipway with a lantern and a file and said that the sea had only taken what it could reach, and that a machine left half-finished would always go looking for its other half.
The following spring the nets came up heavy with herring and the fleet sailed for a month without losing a man. Then the fog came in thick as wool, and the boats began to wander. Tam's sons swore they saw cogs turning in the water beside the hulls, pistons rising through the grey like the ribs of something sleeping, and pale cables drawn tight toward the rocks, pulling each boat back to the quay by its own heartbeat.
Isla, Tam's granddaughter, was nine that winter and the only one who was not frightened. She climbed down the slipway steps at low tide, found the stopped drum beneath the wall, and worked a rusted pawl loose with her thumb. The clicking started again. She told nobody it was only doing its job, and went home to her supper. In the morning the Morag's bell was ringing from under the harbour wall, and every boat that went out after came home.
