Brother Osric had been told, when he came to the scriptorium, that the cat was not to be disturbed. Nobody had told him why. He learned on his third morning, when the ink ran thick and he reached past the grey tom for the blotter, and the tom opened one eye and showed him the exact depth of his displeasure.

The cat belonged to Mother Ysolde, who was the only person in the house who could sleep through Matins. She did it sitting upright in the choir stalls, chin on her chest, a rosary swinging gently from one fist. The cat would climb the stall, circle twice on the veil at the crown of her head, and settle. The sisters called it a miracle. I called it a warm head and a cat with sense.

Then the abbot came to inspect the accounts and found the whole chapter asleep through his sermon, Ysolde in the middle of them, the tom the size of a loaf on her hair. He was not amused. He ordered the cat out. Ysolde woke, looked at him steadily, and said nothing at all, which in our house has always meant the matter was closed.

Next morning a slate hung above the refectory door, in capitals I had painted myself because nobody else could be trusted with the spacing: BEST NAP. The abbot never mentioned it again. I have seen him since, closing his own eyes in chapter with an expression of great dignity.
