Comic-style woman's face on the arm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a woman's face in profile-to-front view, with heavy black hair framing it, large lashes, a defined brow and parted lips. The linework is bold and solid, with the hair rendered as flat black areas and the skin left as open, unshaded space. The image is in black ink only, shown against pale skin, with a blurred teal and white background at the edges of the frame.

The editor wanted the eyes bigger again, so Ivy Marr sat with the brush hovering over the board until the ink dried on its tip. Friday was press day, and the printers in the back room were already stacking the blue plates. 'Bigger,' Mr Haskell said, tapping the proof with a nicotine finger. 'Men buy the eyes.'

Ivy did not make them bigger. She inked the lashes heavier, three strokes where there had been two, and she left the cheek alone. Her old teacher had told her that the skin was the part of the drawing you did not touch, that a blank space would hold the light better than any grey you could scrub into it. The hair she filled solid, black as a coal shed at midnight, and she let its edges curl off the page like smoke that had made up its mind.
On Friday the strip went out with the Saturday edition. Ivy rode the number 9 bus to the depot with a copy folded under her arm, and across the aisle a boy in a school cap was reading the same page. He held it up to the window so the grey light came through the paper. The eyes were just what Haskell wanted. But it was the bare white cheek he kept looking at, the way it sat between the dark hair and the mouth, as if the face had been cut out of the paper and nobody had thought to fill it in.
