Sleepy owl on a swirled branch
Black and grey · Flash
A stylised owl with closed, lash-lined eyes sits on a thick branch that curls into scrolls at both ends. The bold outlines are filled with light shading, and the wings are marked with feather strokes and a zigzag pattern across the chest. The image is a drawing in black and grey pencil with no colour.

Nell Harrow had not slept properly since the Oxford lock keeper's boy took the wrong rope, and the barge Tern Mary rocked at her moorings below Iffley like a cradle nobody would stop. Every night the owl came down from the willow on the towpath and sat on the bow rail, eyes shut tight as church doors, as if it had already decided the river could manage without her.

She tried everything her father had taught her. She counted locks. She sang the bargee's hymn, badly. She laid out the brass lamp, the tin kettle, the spare coil of hemp, and the old chart with the scrolled border that showed every bend between Lechlade and the Thames. The owl did not stir. Its feathers were drawn in neat sharp strokes, and the zigzag on its chest looked to her like the stitching of a quilt someone had meant to finish.
On the fourth night she stopped trying. She sat on the cabin step with a mug of cocoa going cold and talked to it about the coal she had lost in the spring, the man in Abingdon who still owed her a fortnight's wages, and the sister she had not written to. Somewhere past midnight the water changed its note against the hull. The owl's lids lifted a fraction, and it looked at the dark reeds rather than at her.
"Right then," Nell said. "You're on watch, not me."
She went below and slept for eleven hours without dreaming. When she woke the owl was gone, the rail was dry with dew, and the boat was turning gently on the current toward home.
