Owl with padlock, key and roses design

Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash

A drawn tattoo design on a sheet of paper in a spiral sketchbook. An owl with wide eyes and a jewelled brow sits at the centre, holding a heart-shaped padlock and an ornate key, with roses and leaves around it. The shading is in soft graduated greys with fine hatching and bold outlines, and the composition is symmetrical and filled.

Dear Margery, I have kept the brass key you sent me in the tin where Father used to hide his pipe tobacco, and I have not yet decided whether to give it back. The owl you asked about is still perched on the wardrobe in room seven, the one with the jewelled brow the guests keep stroking when they think nobody is watching. Mrs Ashdown swears it was carved for a sea captain's widow who never once unlocked the heart-shaped padlock on her own jewel box, and that is why the key was filed down to a bent, ornamental thing that fits nothing at all.

Yesterday a young man came asking for a room with a view of the pier, and he had the look of someone who had walked a long way to be told no. I gave him seven because the roses on the washstand were fresh, and because he touched the owl's wing before he touched his bag. He stayed three nights. On the last morning he left a pencil sketch on the breakfast table, the same owl, the same roses, but with the key drawn whole and turned in the lock, and under it he had written only: it opens from the inside.

I have looked at it every hour since. I have not tried the box in room seven. I think I am waiting to be the sort of woman who could. Come in August, bring your own key, and we will see whose lock is stiffer. The tea urn still rattles like a cough, and the sea is as grey as the owl's shading, but the front window is clean, and I have not let anyone else have seven. Yours, Edith.
