Mind the sawdust, and keep your elbows off the sweet stall, for Madame Orla will have your pennies if you so much as sneeze near the toffee. Right. Where was I? Ah, the owl. Every fair has one, and this one belonged to the Gilt Parade, a little travelling show that rolled from Ashby to Bideford with three caravans and a dancing bear called Clement who was far too fond of gin.

The owl's name was Tuppence, though nobody could say why, and she lived in a cage of painted willow above the ghost train. She was the only creature on the whole field who never once asked for anything. The lad who ran the Wheel of Fortune swore she could read the tickets, and the strongman swore she was the only one who ever got a proper night's kip. Every evening, at the stroke of nine, she would shut her eyes, tuck her head down into her feathers, and sleep through the screaming, the brass band, and the rain on the tarpaulins.

Then came the August the fair stopped at Halden Common and the wind took the big top clean off its poles. Clement roared into the dark, and the ringmaster's daughter, Esme, climbed the ladder to the cage in her nightgown to rescue the bird. Tuppence did not wake. She only sat on her curled perch, eyes shut, until Esme understood that the owl was not asleep at all. She was waiting, patient as a branch, for someone to come and sit quietly with her.

So Esme sat down on the step beside her, and the two of them waited out the storm together. By morning the canvas was pegged back up and the sweet stall had only lost a bag of toffee. Mind your elbows now. That's the story, and I'll thank you all to go and find your own beds.
