Tribal owl perched on a branch
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A front-facing owl perched on a bare, twiggy branch, with wide staring eyes framed by heavy ornamental markings. The linework is bold and high contrast, with solid black areas, fine hatching and swirling tribal-style patterns across the head, chest and wings. The design is drawn in black and grey on a plain white background, centred and filling the frame.

The owl had not blinked in three nights, and Ashka, the miller's son, said so to anyone who would listen, which was nobody, because the village had heard it already. It sat on the dead ash above the granary with its feet locked round the branch like wet wire, and it stared down the lane at the houses with the same patient fury it had shown the rats.

The elders argued. Grandmother Imra, who kept the salt and the storeroom keys, said owls were the eyes of the dead and should be given bread. The smith said it was a thief with good manners. Ashka climbed the ash at dusk with a lamp and a carved wooden comb, meaning to knock the bird off its perch, and found the bark beneath its claws scored with lines like the ones on the granary lintel: swirling, knotted, cut by his father to keep the river from rising.
He stopped with the lamp held high. The owl turned its head all the way round, looked at the lamp, then at him, and he understood that it had been counting. Every sack, every unbarred latch, every debt chalked on the mill wall. It had come to read the village's accounts.
He climbed down without the comb. In the morning he wrote his father's debts on a clean board, carried it to the granary step, and set the bread he had hidden under his coat beside it. The owl said nothing. When the sun cleared the ridge its eyes narrowed, and the lane stayed quiet for a long time after that.
