Small botanical sprig on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A small sprig of leaves and tiny flower buds is inked in thin black linework on the side of the torso, below the shoulder blade. The fine lines are even and the design is simple, with a single stem branching into small round blooms and leaves. The black and white photograph is softly lit against a plain background, with a white slip dress and the woman's raised arm framing the tattoo.

The hedge-cutter's boy came back from the wood at dusk with his hands empty, and his mother knew from the gate that he had not gone far enough. Everyone in Harrowmere knew the old hazels past the mill were not for cutting. The lord's physician had sent for a sprig of the stem-and-bud growth that flourished only where the trees stood close, because his daughter had stopped eating, and the village had made a bargain with the wood so long ago that nobody could quite recall its terms.

Tomas went back the next morning with his knife wrapped in a rag and a heel of bread in his coat. Under the hazels he found a small sprig growing from the root of a fallen oak, one thin stem branching into three leaves and three tight round buds, drawn in lines so fine they looked like hair. He knelt and spoke to it the way his grandmother had taught him, asking leave, and when he finally reached for it the stem bent away from his fingers rather than snapping.

He understood then that the wood did not want a cutting. It wanted a trade. He broke the bread over the roots, left the knife in the moss, and walked home with nothing but the sprig's shape pressed into his palm. The physician's daughter was not cured that week, but she sat up to watch the buds open on her windowsill, and by midsummer she was carrying the same bread to the wood's edge herself.
