They say the Ashworth Road reunion ran late because nobody could agree who had brought the trophy. Dougie Fenwick, who had once been second in the county at chess and never let anyone forget the first half of that sentence, had kept it on his windowsill for thirty years. Pari Osei had kept the score book. Nobody had kept the caretaker's patience, and by eight o'clock he was standing by the hall doors with his keys in his fist, saying the cabinet in the corridor was waiting for a proper prize and that a tin cup was not a proper prize.

So Dougie filled it from the gutter outside the hall, where the rain had been running all afternoon, and handed it round the circle of folding chairs. Each of them took one swallow, tasting of iron and wet leaves, the way they had at fifteen after a lost match, and passed it on. When it came back to Dougie the water was almost gone, and the four colours of the letters had caught the light from the car park in a way none of them had noticed before. The caretaker held out his hand. Dougie gave him the cup, and the caretaker turned it over, read the rim, and laughed until he had to sit down.
