Colour tattoos on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A forearm with several colour tattoos, the most prominent being a green gecko with a curled tail near the wrist. Other designs include a dragon-like figure in purple and orange, small red and blue outlines, a pair of simple shapes, and words in red and black lettering. The linework is thin and sketchy, with soft colour fills against a plain grey background.

Mrs Pardoe found the gecko at a quarter past eleven, halfway up the wallpaper in room four, its tail curled like the end of a question mark. "Not again," she said to nobody, because the lodger in room four had been out on the pier since supper and the tank on his dresser stood open, its little ramp of slate hanging over the edge.

Teodor came back wet from the rain with a sketchbook under his coat. He had been painting the lighthouse on the breakwater for three weeks, the same grey tower in every weather, and he had a habit of talking to whatever shared his room. He lay on the bed and looked up. The gecko looked down. Between them, on the cracked plaster, a small red heart someone had scratched years ago kept its own quiet time.

"You want the window," he said. "Everyone wants the window."

The lizard turned and walked the length of the ceiling as though it had an appointment, past the painted dragon on the fireplace tile that the landlady swore came from a Blackpool fair, down the sash, and stopped at the sill. Outside, the harbour lamps were smearing into the water. Teodor eased the window open an inch. Cold salt came in, the gecko's throat pulsed twice, and it did not move.

In the morning Mrs Pardoe found them both there, the man asleep across the foot of the bed, the lizard upright on the sill with its toes splayed against the glass like a hand holding something it had no intention of giving back. She put the kettle on and did not charge him for the extra night.
