The ovens at Harrowmere were lit by three, long before the church bell or the first cart, and for an hour the only light on Mill Lane came from Hannah Fell's back window. She kneaded in the dark with her sleeves rolled and her hands white to the wrist, and she did not look up when the latch lifted.

It was a grey goose that came in that winter, with one wing dragging and a single long feather loose at the tip. It walked straight past the sacks of flour to the warm hearth and stood there as if it had paid for the place. Hannah gave it bread crumb and a dish of water. In the morning it was gone, and in its place lay the feather, black at the tip where the goose had been scorched by the oven door.

She used it as a pen for the bakery book, where she wrote down what each customer owed. The feather made a thin, clean line and never blotted. Whatever she wrote with it came true in the way of small things: the widow Price paid her debt by Saturday, the lad who had stolen a loaf was taken on by the smith, and the miller, who had never once said thank you, sent round a sack of his best wheat.

Hannah never saw the goose again. But on the first morning of each new year she left a single warm loaf on the back step, and in the grey light before the bell she found the step swept clean and the feather back where she had hidden it, pointing down toward the page of names that still needed forgiving.
