Small cross tattoo on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close, low-angle black and white photograph of a hand resting on a bare leg, with the wrist turned towards the camera. A small, simple cross is tattooed on the wrist, drawn in thin, dark black linework with little or no shading. The soft tonal contrast and dark background keep the focus on the tattoo and the hand.

Brother Anselm had been sent down the valley road with a sack of salt and a letter for the abbot at Carrow, and he had got as far as the ford when the river came up brown and fast. He sat on a wet stone to wait it out. A woman was already sitting there, a basket of eels at her feet, watching the water as if it owed her money.

"You'll be a while," she said. "Best to pass the time usefully."
She took a thorn from her shawl and pricked a small cross onto the inside of his wrist, quick as sewing, then rubbed soot from her fire-pot into the wound. He said it stung. She said everything worth keeping stung a little at first. She told him the river would drop by the next bell if he kept his promise to say the office at dusk, and that he must never let the mark wash out.
The water dropped. Anselm crossed, delivered the salt, and said his office at Carrow with the abbot listening. Years later, when he was old and the abbey had a new bell, the novices asked about the small dark mark on his wrist. He told them it was a ford-keeper's mark, and that the river had been honest with him ever since, which was more than he could say for the abbot.
