Small figure with trailing script on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small fine line tattoo of a simple figure sits on the inside of a forearm, with a single continuous line trailing down from it into cursive lettering. The linework is thin and even with no shading, and the photograph is in black and white against a dark background.

You have been at the scriptorium since the bell for lauds, and the ink has thickened in the pot because nobody thinks to stir it but you. The light over the Fenland fields has turned the colour of weak tea, and the rooks are working the furrows below the wall as if the harvest belonged to them.

Then the line of the letter catches. You meant only to finish a plain word, the name of the miller's daughter who brings the eggs on Thursdays, but the quill runs on past the last stroke and drags a thread of ink across the vellum to the margin, where it loops into a small figure you did not plan: a bent man in a hood, leaning into a wind that is not there. You stare at it. Osric will have your hide for a blot. Yet the figure looks so pleased with its own journey that you leave it.
The following week the abbot finds the page while checking the copying. He turns it to the light, reads the trailing script twice, and says nothing for so long that you begin to count the rooks again. Then he asks whether the figure is going somewhere or coming back. You tell him you do not know. He nods as though that were the correct answer, sets the leaf aside for the binders, and you understand, with a small cold jolt, that your mistake has been kept.
