A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Come closer, you'll want to hear this one sitting down. My grandmother told it to me under the Bramley tree, the summer the wasps got into the windfalls and nobody would pick up the ladder. There was a little bird that lived in the orchard wall, pale as the inside of a plum, and it had a beak longer than good sense. Every morning it flew down to the lane where the Haversham girl sold eggs from a basket, and every morning it took one bloom from the hedge rose, carried it across the lane in its beak, and dropped it on her step.

She never saw it do this. Nobody ever does. What she saw was the flowers, five petals each, growing back on the hedge faster than they could be picked. She thought the hedge was showing off. Her father thought it was witchery and wanted the hedge burned. Only the old postman knew, because he had watched the bird from his bicycle every dawn for a year and never once said a word, being a man who knew the value of keeping things to himself.

When the frost came early that autumn, the bird did not fly down. The girl went looking along the wall with her basket on her hip and her apron full of crumbs. She found it in the lee of the bramble, wings folded, a single rose-coloured flower still held firm in its beak. She did not take it. She sat down in the wet grass beside it and waited until the sun came over the church, and then she said thank you, which is the only thing anyone has ever needed to say to a bird like that.
