Small heart tattoo on upper chest

Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A close-up photograph of a small, solid black heart tattoo on the upper chest, just below the collarbone. The heart is filled in with dark ink and has crisp edges, with a tiny dot of a mole or mark nearby. The soft warm tones of the skin and hair and the slightly vintage colour treatment dominate the framing, with the tattoo placed off centre.

The snow came early to Hollin Farm that year, and by Martinmas the lower field had drifted to the top of the gate. Abel Crane had three ewes still to lamb and only one lantern with oil in it, so he woke his sister Ada before the cockerel and told her to put her boots on.

They found the first ewe down in the hollow with her legs folded under her. Between them they drew a lamb that came out grey and still, its ribs showing through the wet fleece. Ada rubbed it with straw until her palms ached. Abel stood with the lantern and counted the hay left in the barn in his head, and the number was smaller than he wanted it to be.

Ada put her hand in her apron pocket and brought out the black stone their mother had cut from a lump of coal the winter before she died. It was no bigger than a thumbnail, shaped like a heart, with a notch on one side where their mother's knife had slipped. She warmed it in her fist, then tucked it in the rag she was using to feed the lamb warm milk. The lamb took a breath, then another, and bleated so loudly the other ewes lifted their heads.

In April, when the drifts had gone to slush and the lambs were running the far meadow, Abel took the stone down from the mantel and turned it over. It was still warm from the range. He put it back where Ada could see it and said nothing, because nothing needed saying.
