The band had packed up by eleven, but Doreen Pike still had the cloakroom key in her fist when the bird came in through the open fire door. It struck the ceiling lights, dropped to the sprung floor, and stood there with its head cocked, as if it had paid for a ticket.

Her brother Stan said to leave it, it would find its own way out, but the red on its breast stood out sharply against the grey varnish. She dragged a chair under the high window, propped the sash open with a tin of Brasso, and waited. The bird watched her the way the bandleader had watched the bar takings all evening, sharp and unimpressed. Then it hopped to the edge of the stage and faced the gap as though it had made the decision itself.

When it was gone she stayed on the chair a while longer, listening to the empty room tick as it cooled. Stan came back with two cups of tea that had gone lukewarm. "Bloody thing," he said. "Never seen one in here before." She told him robins came in winter, when the cold got into the hall, and he said that was daft, but he didn't argue.

Outside, the frost on the car park had one line of small prints leading to the kerb. Above them, on the wire that ran from the hall to the chip shop, the bird sat fluffed against the cold and turned towards the lit windows, as if checking the room had emptied properly, before it flew off over the rooftops.
