Small sailboat tattoo on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A hand is raised over a nautical chart, showing a small black sailboat with a triangular sail sitting on waves at the inner wrist. The linework is thin and delicate, with simple solid fills and no shading. The tattoo is in black ink only and sits near the centre of the frame against the pale blue and cream chart.

You learn the boarding house on Marrow Street by its smells before anything else: boiled cabbage on the stairs, vinegar in the scullery, and under it all the cold salt of the harbour coming through every warped sash. Mrs Pellow keeps a chart pinned above the hall table, a faded Admiralty sheet of the bay with the soundings pencilled in, and she tells you it was her husband's, lost off the Point with the sloop Tern before the war. You dust around it every morning. You do not touch the small black boat she has drawn in the margin in ink, a single triangle of sail riding two scratchy lines of waves, because she has never once told you why.

In March the lodger in the attic room leaves owing three weeks, and in his place you find a folded tide table and a pencil stub. You sit on the bottom stair with the chart on your knees and count the depths in fathoms, the way the old man taught the lad who is now you. By supper you have it: a channel off the Point that runs dry at the ebb, and a boat that could have crossed it if someone had only waited for the right hour and stopped trying to force the wind.

You take the tide table to Mrs Pellow after the plates are cleared. She holds it under the lamp for a long time and says nothing. Then she reaches past you and, with the nib of her own pen, adds one small sail beside the soundings, close to the water, where the channel bends. Her hand is steady. Outside, the harbour bell goes for the turn of the tide, and you realise she has been waiting to hear it for eleven years.
