Tiny sailboat on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A hand is raised in front of a nautical chart with blue contour lines and coastal detail. A very small sailboat with a single mast and a low hull sits on the inner wrist, drawn with thin black linework and a few wave strokes beneath it. The ink is black only, and the tattoo is the sole point of focus against the pale, busy map.

The chart had been pinned to the back wall of the Hallows Sailing Club since before I was born, and on the morning of the wedding my sister Maddie asked me to take it down without tearing the corners. I did it with a biro cap between my teeth while the caterers argued about the urn.

Under the tide tables, at the mouth of Carrick Sound, someone had drawn a boat. It was no bigger than a fingernail, a single mast and a low hull, with three wave lines beneath it in soft pencil. Dad said it was Eddie's doing, the groom's father, who had marked the spot in 1979, the afternoon he hauled a capsized dinghy out of the shallows and ended up sharing a flask of lemonade with the girl who'd been sailing it.

Eddie wanted the chart on the top table. Maddie had booked a laminated copy from the print shop in town, something sensible, but he was firm about the original. So I carried it up to the hall, smoothed it flat under the fairy lights, and fixed the corners with four brass drawing pins I'd borrowed from the club noticeboard.

When the speeches came, Eddie stood up, cleared his throat and said nothing for so long that the caterers stopped clattering. Then he tapped the little boat with one finger and said, 'That's where the tea was. The rest of it is just sea.' Maddie cried into her napkin. I did too, though I'd promised myself I wouldn't, and the chart stayed under the lights until the last song, that tiny sail catching the glow as if it had been waiting for us all along.
