Small sea-themed finger tattoos

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand held against a dark background shows four small black tattoos, one on each of four fingers. The motifs are a seahorse, a spiral shell, a mermaid silhouette with small bubbles, and a curling wave. The ink is solid black with simple outlines and no visible shading, and the composition focuses on the fingers with a silver ring on one finger and another on the lower hand.

The harbour at Skerry Point smells of diesel and gutted mackerel long before the nets come up, and you have learned to keep your hands busy while you wait. Uncle Alfie sits on an upturned crab pot with a sail needle in one fist and a tin of lamp black in the other, and he tells you to stop wriggling before he pricks the first mark into your forefinger.

It is a seahorse, curled tight as a question mark. "For the Marion Ellen," he says. "She'll carry you home if you don't argue with her." The spiral shell goes on the next finger, because every skipper's wife on this quay keeps a whelk shell on her windowsill and swears a boat can find its way back by listening to one. He does the mermaid next, and it takes longer, her tail a long lazy curve with a few dots rising beside her for bubbles. "She's not luck," he says, not looking up. "She's the one who fills the nets and takes her fee for it." You laugh, the needle slips, and he curses it until it behaves.

The wave goes on last, a single swirl across the knuckle of your little finger. When he's done he blows on it the way you blow on soup. The ink looks black and final. "Don't scrub at it," he says. "It fades to whatever you need it to be." Then he hands you a length of rope and shows you how to splice the eye.

Next morning the Marion Ellen noses out past the breakwater, grey and sulky, and you grip the rail with your whole hand. The wave runs across your knuckle with every pull on the line, the seahorse and the shell and the mermaid all bent to the same work, and back on the quay Alfie is still on his crab pot, lifting his cap at nobody in particular.
